Radiator Fan switch install...weird problems, HELP

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...10#post2018410

There's a link to the product I'm using, and the group buy I got it from.

First, I dont think my problems are because of a defective product (I got the manual fan switch through a group buy from speed speciaility), I think the person who owned the car before me did some crazy rewiring of the fans to *TRY* to fix his overheating problems (turned out to be a blown head gasket) Anyways...With the car completely off, both LED's are on all the time, turn the key to the ON position and they go off, and come on depending on where the switch is, like they're suppose to. Start the car and they still work right, but after the car's been running for about 5-10 seconds both lights come on as do both fans. I don't think this is normal for a cold car (hadnt been started in a week). I think the car has always done this (fans always seem to run regardless of temperature), I just wasnt sure if it was normal or not..and obviously it never overheated so it wasnt a problem to me . Using freescan, I made sure the PCM was seeing the right water temperature, it was. Does anybody have a wiring diagram so I can start tracing this problem or any idea why its doing this? I just took the radiator off, the wires that go to the connectors to the fans had been cut at some point and twisted back together and wrapped with tape, but they were done well enough so it should work. Even with the fans unhooked completely both LED's are still on inside the car. I have a copy of my orignial BIN file around here somewhere, I haven't touched anything relating to the fan stuff, but maybe somebody before me did. Thanks in advance.

Carson

I forgot to mention, when the key is off and both fans LED's are on, neither fan is on, and the switch doesn't have any affect on them.

The easiest fix for your LEDs that stay on, is to change the power source for them to switched power. That will take care of it.

Fan schematic

Use the top or bottom in the link, depending on how many fan relays you have. They were changed from 2 to 3 during the 1994 model year.

Also sounds like you might have some different programming for the fan ON temps or a wired in device to alter them.

Thanks, I only have 2 relays (I think anyways). I'm still doing some checking, but at this point its really seeming like its computer related, everything else is checking out so far.

Another quick question...in "low" is it suppose to be both fans on and just slower than "high" or one fan on?

If you have a 2 relay fan system, there is no 'low' or 'high' speed..
just 'primary' [drivers side] or 'secondary' [psgr side fan] or both.. they are single speed fans..

Ah its a 3 relay system, I didnt notice the other relay last night when I was working on it haha. I rewired the LED's to a switched power source, so they dont come on weird anymore. I think the fans coming on has something to do with the previous owner reprogramming the computer. Would anybody mind taking a look at my bin file? I know the top speed limiter is set to something weird like 140, havent ever heard of one set there before.

both LED's are on all the time, turn the key to the ON position and they go off, and come on depending on where the switch is, like they're suppose to. .
I seem to have the same problem. With the car completely off they're both (leds) on. Awhile back my radio went, so me and a friend hotwired the radio so it would work by jumping some fuses. My windows also roll up and down with the car off.

The fans only come on when I turn the key to the half-way on position. is this the way its suppose to be?

anyway, where is another power source i can use so the LED's don't stay on all the time?

Hmm, my fans only come on with the switch at the ON position..not sure if thats what u mean, but that's what mine do. You could probably run the power for the LED's off of the fuel pump circuit possibly, not sure how you'd go about doing it, but it shouldn't be hard...There's a wire for it on the passengers side near the battery on mine.

the switch at the ON position
yeah thats what i mean.

Any advice on how long the battery would be able to support the fans on HIGH? I would like to flip the fans on high and walk away for awhile.

Well, those fans seem pretty strong, so I wouldnt leave it running on high for too long. Well ****, mine just run all the time when the motor is on, so much for a switch lol

Nobody informed me that if the SES light is on, the fans are on high I threw a code for the MAF sensor, again...so thats what was making the fans go crazy, they're all better now.
