Quick question about overlap (hotcam/cc503)

After extensive searching I have found that the Hotcam and the cc503 are believed very similar. Many argue that the cc503 is better for emissions as it has less overlap, Hotcam = 59* and cc503 = 55*.

My question is that if the cc503 has steeper lobe ramps, if the cam cycles were both plotted on a graph, how does the area of the overlap (in terms of lift and duration of the overlap) compare with each cam.

I'm led to believe that the steeper lobe ramps of the 503 would give a narrower duration as we know, but also higher peak of overlap, the Hotcam giving more overlap duration but a lower peak of overlap.

Is it possible that both overlap events of each cam could flow exactly the same or maybe even more in the case of the 503 even though it has less overlap duration?

It would be even better if anyone has a link to any graphs of these cams so we can see for sure. Its the area under the plotted overlap that I would like to know.

Thanks in advance.

Your gettting pretty in depth for me. But if your trying to decide which cam to get i would go for the hotcam. i bet you wouldnt notice alot more power with the 503(xe cam isnt it?) you may notice lack of power past 6k unless you have a rev kit if it is a xe cam.

http://www.compcams.com/Technical/TimingTutorial/

Use the graph for comparing what cam specs you want.
I suggest you read the tutorial for a better understanding of overlap.

Don't you mean the CC305? 230/230 on a 114

the CC503 is 224/230 on a 112

Re: Quick question about overlap (hotcam/cc503)

I have drawn up a quick graph of these two cams based on the LSA, assuming that the cam is centred to put the centre of the overlap at TDC. I also assumed that both cams are on 1.6rr.

I only know the overlap duration of the cams (Hotcam 59* and xe503 55*) at 0.006 and the lift duration at .05", and went from there, and as I don't know the shape of the curve/lobe, I can't comment on the overlap area.

My findings are that the 224/230 is at 3* overlap at .05" and the Hotcam at 1*. Anyone know how much flow occurs at this amount of lift and how significant the differences are?

I also notice that the peak overlap of the hotcam happens a couple of degrees before the peak of the xe503.

Can anyone confirm this, or have I made a mistake?

Re: Quick question about overlap (hotcam/cc503)

I can't answer your question...too technical for a guy like me. However, maybe this will help. I have run both the HOT Cam and CC503...I prefer the CC503 - that's why I still have the CC503 in my car and the HOT Cam is sold! To answer your question, I would contact Lloyd Elliot...you can find his contact information at www.eportworks.com
