Questions for anyone who has rebuilt an LT1

I am polanning to rebuild my motor but i have no expierence with LT-1's or roller blocks. What is different as far as a rebuild goes from an Lt-1 and a regular 350. What internal parts are different i.e. bearings, pistons .... Is there anything i need to know before i start buying parts. My number one question is does it need special pistons or cam bearings. thanks for any help you can give me.

Any suggestion on parts would me greatly appeciated. the only one so far im fore sure about is the hotcam kit.

I too am seriously considering a build this Summer... money willing. You can get a book on how to build the LT-1 on Amazon or at Barnes and Noble. It goes through the specs how to build but doesn't go into performance that much.

The only modifications you need to consider are displacement, heads, and cam. Depends on your application.

Internally the only part that would be different is the crank with the one piece rear main compared to pre 87 SBC cranks. The timing chain is LT1/LT4 specific b/c of the water pump, and the heads are also.

Besides all the rest is the same...although I cant remember if its a small or large bearing SBC...I think small.

The LT1 is almost all "noninterchangeable"

The heads use reverse cooling and therefore different coolant passages (and head gaskets)

Our intake manifold is not interchangeable

Our oil pump is a bit different, but the same as the TPI ones i believe.

The earlier camshafts had a shorter dowel

the timing gear, distributor, water pump and a few other things are different as well.
My advice is not to call summit for parts unless you know what parts you need. I got a few parts from them tha wouldn't work on the LT1.

lifters, pushrods, rockers and rocker studs ARE interrchangable to the best of my knowlege

oil pan and gasket varry from pre 1/ peice rear main seal motors (and maybe even TPI as well)

we have the smaller (153?) tooth flexplates.
thats all I can think of right now

that should help
