Re: Questions About The Opti's?

OPTI's suck

Honestly thats all i gotta say bout them, I'm in the midst of changing mine cuz it went on me. It is possible. I first changed my cap and rotor and went through hell with it cuz I needed a E-4 female torx long socket to fit into the Distributor cap to take it off and no part store or dealership had one. I found a snap on dealer that drives around to dealerships sell one to me. I got the Distributor cap off and the rotor was held in by the same size bit but it was a male bit, so what did I have to do find the snap on dealer to sell me the male E-4 torx bit. Trust me you have to find a snap on, Mac, or specialized tool dealer to get these bits. Anyway needless to say it wasn't the cap and rotor it turned out to be the opti spark. you have to shop around for the best deal oem is like 650.00 but you can get down to 110.00 if you buy a remanufactured one through parts plus or Nappa. to upgrade to the 95-97 style there are some differences you need to read into, I don't know much but I know if you go with the vented optispark you need to drill some vacuum lines in you intake and put a different camshaft in. I read a lil into it but I'm sticking with the stock opti. I have a 1993 firebird 5.7 LT1 so I know the pain your going through. If you go to www.shbox.com it shows some good stuff on the regand vented opti.

All stock with no cat, starting mods soon, the check is in the mail (right)

The vented optis are still prone to failure, and there are other products on the market that offer the reliability the opti can't offer and the benefits of an aftermarket ignition box as well.

If you think your cap and rotor are on their way out, you may want to consider one of the above listed products. You will still retain the optical secion, but imo that part lasts much longer than the front half.

Unvented opti from Jason Cromer:319 plus actual shipping..
Genuine complete GM part...
To get the cap off use a screw from the throttle body cover.. take it off, get 2 nuts that fit it, double nut it, then use a socket to use this as a T-4 female socket..
Not really worht just changing cap and rotor in my opinion, as it costs 150+ just for that.. and with the water pump removal, it's just easier to replace the whole thing..
