Question on the rear cam "core" plug......

Need some opinions please.

How far to drive this thing in? I got the edges flush and square with the block, then was trying to get it below the edge of the block around 0.100". Well I got the thing out of square and remembered seeing a raised ridge around the bore(at this point I'm ill because I drove it beyond my target), so I decided to drive it in until I hit the ridge(or the bearing....lol). It did hit the hard stop. So now my question is this....Is it in too far?

It does not appear to have broken the plane of the rear bearing and the cam rides a little over a 1/16" away from edge of the bearing. Anyone else done this before?

I'll try to get a couple of pictures before I go to bed.

That should be fine. Did you use any sealant on it?

Yeah, I used the Permatex High Temp Thread Sealant. If you look close, you can see the white around the edges.

If I recall, I just had mine flush with the block. You should be good.

The factory manual has a picture, showing it's "official" position, where they measure from the back of the plug to the edge of the block(11/32). The plug is roughly 0.250" thick, so 0.344" - 0.250" = 0.094". That sets it at a depth of ~0.100" from the edge of the block. That's why I was shooting for that depth. The depth around the plug as it is set now is 0.135" - 0.140".

I'm going to put my cam in tonight. I'll do some measurements with a dial indicator on how deep the cam can go with the retainer installed and the cam gear mounted on the cam. That will tell us the space between the back of the cam and the plug.

Hmmm, it's closer than I thought. The total cam endplay with the retainer installed is 0.064". With the cam gear installed the total movement of cam is 0.007". That leaves me with 0.057" between the cam and core plug.

Is that too small? I know it doesn't touch and I personally think it will be okay, but now is the time to redo it if I need to. Opinions?

As long as it's not hitting the cam you're fine.
