Re: Question about which mufflers to get

Well, I know you say you don't have the funds, but I vote for a Borla Cat-Back...I must say, if you plan on doing headers WITH and ory later on, I'd consider a Magnaflow, as the Borla produces annoying resonances around 2k RPM. Do not buy a Flowmaster, they will fall apart extremely fast, and they're really Mustang mufflers anyway. Get a catback no matter what you decide.

all im sayin is that, the money you will drop on the muffler is pointless for performance. It wont help much at all, but im not sure if that is what you are going for. If you want louder exhaust, just put a cut out in, it would be even cheaper and then you can get it cut out when you get the cat back.

I put a Flowmaster AT catback on my car with stock manifolds and converters.
Sounded nice for a couple months, then began to fall apart on the inside and made a nasty rattling noise. They gave me a new one, and I put LTs and ORY and it doesnt sound all that great, sounds almost the same as the stock muffler, just a bit louder. So now I would like to get another muffler.
Maybe you should just get a cutout installed, sounds great with stock manifolds and converters. Then later on buy a whole catback.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

I have the hooker catback and love it. The flowmaster for our cars sounds too raspy, IMO. The baffle design doesn't sound good with a cross-flow muffler. One of my friends with a 94 Z28 has a FM on his car and i don't like it at all. The hooker doesn't rasp at all and has a split personality, so to speak. Nice deep rumble at idle and part throttle, but screams at WOT. Very clean sound, has a very pulsating tone to it (close to a true-dual setup). They're known for rusting quickly, but i solved that by spray painting the pipes with 1200* BBQ grill paint. 3 years later there is very minimal rust (only where the paint was scraped off). Don't paint the muffler itself though, the powercoating on it is great as it is and spray painting it will eat the coating off. No rust on the muffler either, BTW.

The edlebrock muffler sounds good too. Another friend of mine with a 93 Z28 has one welded to the stock pipes and it sounds great. A little louder than the hooker, but also has a clean sound to it.

Don't have much experience with other systems, so i can't comment on those. Well, except for the loudmouth, which i disliked even more than the flowmaster.

My $.02

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

I have this currently on my car. It sounds pretty mean, but of course, it has some rasp to it. I am in the process of installing mac mids + ORY, and will be throwing on a magnaflow as it will be way too loud with not cats AND no muffler

Other than a FlowMaster how about a supertrapp.
I love them I had one on my 85 camaro till it got T-boned.
I like them because you can make them quite or open them up and make them loud.
And you can adjust them so nobody can say they don't make any power.

Sounds like this may be the way to go then. So just yank the muffler and get a y pipe? I could get those cool classic rectangle tips too.

Re: Question about which mufflers to get

I had my pipe cut right before the muffler, then had a shop do up a 90* turn so that the tips exit underneath the licence plate.

If emissions aren't a problem just get rid of the cat. I know a kid that ran the stock muffler but a gutted cat and it sounded pretty dang good.
