Question about mid-lengths VS. Sorties

I have been thinking of purchasing some AS&M mid-length headers. I went to talk to my mechanic yesterday and he gave me the advice to go with sorties such as BBK. He said the AS&M headers would rob some low end torque as to the sorties would produce more. I never really thought about the 3/8'ths robbing Hp or tourque. Does it really matter if I lose some low end but gain a bit of high?? I mean of course it will matter I just want to know if what he suggested is the best thing? I am looking for maybe 400-500 hp out of my car. I plan to put maybe a hotcam or cc304 or cc305 and port the heads. Any feedback on this??

What your mechanic said isn't true. Longer tube headers make more hp/tq all across the power band. I've seen several dyno sheets where the person swapped shorties for long tubes and they gained a lot in the mid range and some in the low/high end. Granted this is for long tubes, but you'll still see more power across the whole band with mid-lengths over shorties.

So i wont really lose any low end torque by using mid-legnths? I will be safe just going with the AS&M?
