question about heads.

96 camaro z28, 6 speed, lt1 daily driver,

im pulling the engine, spun bearing=rebuild!

i want to put a cc503 cam in it, cause ive heard that its a good drivable cam.

with good power gains. i was wondering, what if i keep my heads stock, (no

porting is what i mean) i dont have the money to buy heads.

This is what i have in mind.. Rebuild, bore out .30 over, cc503, headers,

magnaflow catback with cutout. 1.6 rockers, comp cam lifters. tell me if that

sounds about right. car is going to be a daily driver, maybe take it to the

track sometimes. other than that i just want a fun car. and suggestions is

well appreciated.

Re: question about heads.

I would have the heads ported and polished. Custom tune or dyno tune is a must when u change cams imo

yeah i forgot to put anything about a tune on there. And how much difference

would it make if i didnt port and polish vs porting and polishing it? what i mean

is.. is it worth the money?

Re: question about heads.

I've got a similar build going on but i opted too have the heads ported and polished. Along with planing the heads and block. Shooting for 11.5 to 1 cr. Let that baby breath. I don't know how soon you are planning on doing this but my motor should be done in about a week and i can tell you how i made out. Im gonna go get it dyno tuned when its done so it'll probably be two weeks before i have the results. I have no experience with cam only upgrade and im definitely new too lt1 performance. Maybe someone else will chime in and give you an idea of what you stand too gaon

Re: question about heads.

I guess it depends on who does them. My.neighbor runs a speed shop and i got a complete 355 built with speed pro hyperforged pistons custom ground cam scorpion 1.6 rr's ported and polished heads, intake.removed and installed for 2900. Im sure i.missed a few things but that's the basics

Re: question about heads.

I know you will make alot more power having the heads done "right" with the right cam. There are people gettin 400 rwhp with stock heads ported and polished and the right cam. Also get a cold air intake for that beast. More air is more power

Re: question about heads.

The cc503 is one of the better off the shelf cams for stock lt1 heads; you should be make 340rwhp give or take a few hp if everything is done correctly. It will be good for a daily drive, just be sure you get a tune pcmforless.com will be all you need for that set up. Run a thin head gasket to bump up compression victor reinz 5898 is a good gasket.

Denis- I would greatly appreciate you getting me those numbers! I'm planning

on having mine done within the next 5 weeks or so. gotta save up money,

the spun bearing was a little unexpected! and does anyone know where i can

buy a torsion bar (goes from the rear end up to the transmission?)

Torsion bar? Maybe you mean the torque arm..it bolts onto the rear and slides into a bushing on the transmission. You can get them pretty much anywhere that sells suspension components for our cars. If you just want a stock replacement, try ebay...

Re: question about heads.

LCAs and relocation brackets will help with wheelhop far more than an aftermarket torque arm.

X2 on this!

Also if you are having to save money right now and its not coming easy, for a simple rebuild I wouldn't bother with getting the heads ported and polished for a simple cc503 cam. (Trust me on this one). Once you get this light rebuild done, start saving your money for a good rebuild. By the time you get some serious money saved up, that little 503 and stock heads will feel old and you will be wanting more power anyhow. The thing is, if you get the heads done, you might as well get a cam matched for it. And if you have that, then you will have to have the supporting valvetrain. Then it just leads to a bottom end that will support the new hp levels you will be turning, not to mention it will have to breathe so count on a bigger throttle body and headers with a good exhaust. Let's not forget the trans and rear end that will be on borrowed time behind that engine. Next thing you know you have $10,000 invested, lol.
