Question about changing the oil..

Im running Moble 1 5w-30. My question is how often should I change the oil? I only drive it.. well have put a little over a thousand miles on it since April, and that included a couple irregular 200+ mile trips. I would imagine that I would need to change it more in a time period then a miles period then, no? How long would you recommend?

TIA
Craig

Re: Question about changing the oil..

The regular maintenance schedule is 3 months or 3,000 miles. Figure on at least 4 oil changes a year, I drive a lot and change mine at least 7 or 8 times a year.

Re: Question about changing the oil..

Twice a year would be good and I would suggest a different oil, the 5w-30 M1 specifically is proven too thin for the LT1. If you like M1 then I suggest the 0w-40 or the 5w-40 Truck and SUV. otherwise Castrol Syntec 0w-30 labled "made in Germany" is about the ultimate for this motor, there are other good choices like Amsoil Xw-30.
I would also like to add get out and enjoy that thing some more a few more miles will do no harm and you will get your moneys worth out of these oil changes then.

Re: Question about changing the oil..

If you drive that little I sure wouldn't change it more than twice a year. Especially since you are using synthetic.

Re: Question about changing the oil..

I've been using Mobil 1 5-30 and my driving habits are similar to yours. I actually think I only put maybe 2000 or so miles on it this year since spring. What I've been doing the last couple years is at the end of the season (like around now) changing it with some cheap dino oil and a regular filter. Then in March/April change it back to M1 with a K&N filter and run with that for the season. I just do that so when it sits for the winter it has some fresh oil in it. I dont like it sitting for the winter with used oil in there even if it is synthetic with all the acids and things. I might only take it out a couple of times in the winter if its nice out some days. I'm swithing over to Royal Purple 10/30 next year and using the K&N filter.
