question about 383 and top end

so i decided to go n/a after looking at the price of superchargers. at least for now.

i did a search and read a few people talk about how its not a good investment unless you go with after market heads. i plan on puting a lot into the top end of the motor already. would porting and polishing the stock heads be enough to support the 383 or i would really need after market heads?

What kind of revs do you expect to see? If it's not more than 63-6400rpm a set of properly ported stock heads will be fine. Above that, especailly with a 383, the port volume is not big enough to supply the needed air.

yeah there's still gains to be had even if you top out the flow potential with a built 383. still will have a wider torque curve, and more usable power, the problem is mostly above 5000rpm where aftermarket castings would benefit.

but if your already goin to spend the coin on a great top end, then no reason NOT to spend a few extra bucks and make the shortblock 383 or 396. the only thing that stopped me from goin 396 was I didnt want to have to worry about busting into the coolant jackets or cementing the block.

hmmmmm well im not really sure of an answer for that yet but i expect i would go about 6300rpm

is there any head that i would see a huge improvement over a stock ported head that would make them worth buying?

also the guy i was gona send my heads out no longer does porting i have no idea why. im going to look around locally but is there someone that people on the forum use?

any advice on parts or any thing you can give me is appreciated i rather learn from every one elses mistakes and save my self some money . and again its just gona be street/strip car so i dont really care about millage and willing to give on road maners

Lloyd Elliot "Portworks" is the LE you see people here refer to all the time for head work. There are others as well, just do a search.

well the LE 4 cam has worked great for another member. but Im not sure on the specs. and Im not sure what cam would be ideal with aftermarket castings. but Im goin to guess that your wanting to stick with hydraulic rollers just by judging your questions so far. so maybe the LE3 cam. personally though, I dont like to buy just what someone suggests. Id figure out what heads first, self imposed rpm limits, then select the cam. plus, are you auto or M6? that will make a big difference too.

hes a sponsor here. look up elliot port works on the sponsor page. contact him. Im sure he'd love to discuss the proper matching setup with you too. and I know he has ported some aftermarket castings for people too. so ask him about that option, and what he thinks it could be worth to see if you want to go down that road or stay stock castings.
