PVC Vacuum Port Best Place

I did some searching before i asked and couldnt find anything too definate. Anyway what is the best location for vacuum source for the PVC? On my 96 LT1 it is at the front of the manifold running around the side. However I have seen many that just have a very short piece of hose running to one of the ports close to the PVC location. Mind you these are normally "conversion" or transplanted motors without power brakes so you got an open port right there. Any thoughts?

It may have just been the difference in the year of the transplant you saw. 95-97 are like the one you have and 93-94 have the short U-shaped pipe.
