putting on the oil pickup tube
putting on the oil pickup tube
okay, i hope i dont come off sounding retarded here. but, here goes anyways... i am trying to get the pickup tube onto my new oil pump. this thing has to be the biggest PITA. i have removed the spring from the bottom half of the pump and placed it in a vice. first i tried a thin layer of grease and pushing the tube in that way. not happening. so i tried heating up the bottom half of the pump with a torch (after wiping up the grease) and tried putting the tube on that way (by hand still). this thing absolutely does not want to go onto the pump.
any body got any good suggestions? i dont really want to hammer (w/ a rubber mallet) the tube on because i dont want to bend/dimple/break the pickup tube. i'm out of ideas at the moment. any and all help is appreciated. thanks.

Re: putting on the oil pickup tube
Not sure which pump you are using but if the tube is a press fit it should have a raised lip on the tube made for an installation tool. If you don't have one you can try this;wrap the tube just above this lip with a piece of solder and hold it there with masking tape, then find an open end wrench that will fit around the tube and on top of the solder;holding the wrench with your hand you should be able to tap on the wrench with a hammer and flatten the solder and not damage the tube.It worked for me. I hope I made it clear enough.

The open end wrench trick is what I used in lieu of an install tool. You must get the tube perfectly straight and true from all angles going in. It's a little hard to eyeball because of the shape.
