To put in a new cat. converter, I need......

OK, I've got slp shorties with either a stock Y pipe or an slp Y pipe, either way it's 3" right? The previous owner took the cat off and I need one to pass emissions nowTh. e new cat should be welded to the Y pipe, and the catback system I'll get is then flanged to fit on the outlet of the cat, right? I am confused on this and I don''t understand yet- please help me out. I should get a 3" in 3"out cat right? The catback will be a hooker which is 3" dia so everything should be OK. Just to be sure, any cat I get should be a 3 inch in/out right? I saw a random tech cat that had to use an installation kit with it. What's the kit for if it welds to the Y and flanged to a catback?
Thanks
