I've seen plenty of H/C LT1's making around 400RWHP, you need to get the right combo going. Good ported heads (Lloyd Elliot or Phil Odom at Advanced Induction come to mind, do a search for either), a good matched cam (Combination Motorsports has a great cam kit plus expertise to help you select one), good shorty or longtube headers, decent exhaust, CAI, etc and you should be good to go.

this all sounds a little more promising. now, the money part of it....would it be cheaper to do it to an ls1 since the ls1 would not need much head work?
and i stress again, i am in no way trying to degrade the lt1, i am just trying to get a good feel from every aspect before i begin the journey to 380.
and by the way, thanks to everyone who has already replied, i really appreciate it.
thanks,
Michael.

If I could have bought an LS1 when I picked up my car 2 years ago I would have. They were much more money at the time. Bolt-ons and a 150 shot of N20 have gotten many a LS1 into the 11's. If you want 380RWHP you going to need head work and a cam whether you have a LT1 or an LS1...keep that in mind.

Dito, but you'll find working on a LS1 easier for cam change wire changes etc.

yeah and that's another reason i was leaning towards it. even if i have to wait till next summer when the prices drop a little bit for ls1's it may be worth the wait....

i was thinking about doing the same thing last year, but i did some research and decided to stay with my lt1, unless your going to a late 01 or a 02, not worth it. they all differ year to year, and all 98-early 01s have this major oil burning issue due to poor oil ring design. some years got bigger cams, some got bigger injectors some have smaller injectors, the 98s supposedly cant be tuned as easily. blah blah blah.

380 rwhp is 380 rwhp weather it comes from a ls1, a lt1, a l98 or a honda civic, i say stick wiht what you got get a heads and cam combo and your there.

Damnbuster, I am running 7-10 psi. My stock motor lasted for about a total of 114,000 miles 95,000+ of those were with the SC. Now I just did a quick and cheap rebuild with the stock crank and rods, but went with forged pistions.

check out numbers in the sig. not 380rwhp, but damn near close. gas mileage didn't suffer much and the cam is liveable for everyday use.

I'd bet good money if you ditched the Hypertech and got some real tuning youd be a lot closer to 400RWHP.

I made the 384 rwhp last weekend. I dont know what my mpg is though but it has dropped since doing the heads and cam. Its not that bad though, still better that my '68 428 bird. lol. Its not that hard to get the h.p., just get your heads done right by Lloyd, they have to flow really well. Then get a good cam, and full length headers and unrestricted exhaust. My hp was still climbing when I got knock retard and the PCM pulled a whole bunch of timing and basically ended the dyno run. It was also 100*.
Exhaust beyond my ORP's is more critical than I thought, I made that run with the cut-out open, the next run I closed it and lost 28+ hp through the stock cat back. So I was wondering what exhaust jmzlt1 and llafro used for their dyno runs?

I wish that was true. I had a pcm for less dynotune and there was no improvement at all. Like .2 rwhp and 1 rwtq. I was shocked not to mention Bryan was too. As far as track times, I've run a 12.74 at 109.6. That was with 4.10 gears. Disappointing to say the least but I am only launching at 3000 rpm w/ drag radials. 60 ft's are in the 2.0's and 1.98's. I don't want to balloon the rear yet. W/ 3.73's mph went up to 111.7 but my times sucked because of poor track prep. I know this car has at least a 12.4 in it, just have to work w/ the suspension.

i thought with 380rwhp you'd be more towards 115mph...that kinda disappoints me to see it's only about 110mph. does it really take that much to hit 115mph?

also, quicksilver97ta, did you have your stock 97lt1 heads ported? or did you buy aftermarket and then have them ported more?
