PUSHROD length need help!!

Hello guys got a question I'm in the middle of doing a cam swap on my 96 z28 lt1im using ls7 lifters I have the comp.cam checking springs and the comp cam pushrod length checker I know piston has got to be at tdc rite and both valves closed but when I do that to check the length do I also do preload after zero lash do I go 1/4 or 1/2 turn to check the lenght then check where the mark is on valve tip from rocker right I'm using comp cam nsa 1.6 thanks guys

The amount of preload is not so important, as long as you have some. The light weight of the checking springs are not going to allow the lifter to really compress. So, it is more going to act like a solid lifter. You just want it to operate without any slack, so that the rocker stays in firm contact with the valve stem as you rotate the engine to make the witness mark.
