pulled the heads off my stock LT1 of 127K miles

I decieded to go with a new short block and get some good heads and a cam to go with my blower.

I pulled the valve covers and found double coil valve springs?? are stock LT1 springs double?

This is what is looks like....

Then i got the head off and for a 127,654 miles on the motor it looks pretty good.

This is the #6 cylinder wall, How does it look?

As far as I know, the stock springs are double coil. Mine are, anyway.

What's up with that piston, though? Did you clean it or something? Looks way too clean to be off a running engine...

Pics aren't showing up.

You're saying you have dual-spring valve springs? If so, no, LT1's do not come with dual spring valve springs.

Not a true double coil, but have that flat wire coil in the center- for dampening oscillations or something, I believe.

Yea, weird i can see a thin metal spring inside the outer spring.

On my old 96 LT1 they didnt have that inner spring thing.

No i didnt clean any of the pistons, the thing looks new, i dont get it, im starting to wonder how many miles are on this LT1.

Looks strange to me, those pistons look remarkably clean for a high mileage engine. The chambers are nice & dirty but the pistons appear to have been recently installed?

that is how mine looked when I took the heads off a couple of weeks ago with 120,000 on it. IDK, maybe they just tend to stay clean

I suppose so. I haven't had the heads off mine yet, so LT1s are new to me. The other engines I've seen looked a lot dirtier than that though. Maintenance and average throttle input might have something to do with it too. Kind of like a perk for people that floor it a lot, I guess.

Thats how mine looked at 138,000 when I tore it apart. Those springs also look the same as the ones on my 94.

Re: pulled the heads off my stock LT1 of 127K miles

As for your cylinder walls:

They look fabulous for that kind of mileage. What type of oil do you run? Those lines you can see on it, thats from honing a cylinder. Usually after a few thousand miles they look like yours. And once you got your miles on it, they look smooth. No visable lines ( Inless you had a catastrophic failure )

The pistons look very clean, but from what I have seen on this board, alot of people have extremely clean engines once they tear them down. There was someone a few weeks ago with 100K+ and still had hone marks on the cylinder walls.

mine still had crosshatch marks on the cylinder walls at 130k, Ive never seen an engine that clean after that many miles. I literally scooped sludge out of my heads and lifter valley the first time I tore an lt1 down. Those arent stock springs.

Pistons and spring's and block look normal. Can't tell if the spring has a flat dampener or an inner spring. If it's got a round wire inner spring it ain't factory..
Shhhhh I would rebuild that cherry in the back yard. Have a shop deglaze the cyls, check the crank, vat it,install new cam brgs, new rings and brgs, oil pump and timing chain set,new ported heads, cam,RR's and go have some fun.

Re: pulled the heads off my stock LT1 of 127K miles

My stock engine was very clean just like that at 96K miles, and the heads were definately cleaner then those. Every LT1 that I have had the heads, with the exception of mine had 120K+ miles and could still see the crosshatch in the bores. My cam bearings were still beat though, and the crank/bearings weren't real great either.
