Re: Proper Coolant Ratio

Some coolant is "ready to use" and others have to be mixed. I use Dexcool in southwest Florida with no problems whatsoever. And I even tow boats with my car!

Re: Proper Coolant Ratio

You can go with less than a 50/50 mix with water. Antifreeze ups the boiling point of water, and lowers the freezing point. The more antifreeze you have, the more of this effect you gain. However, antifreeze doesn't have the cooling properties of water, so the more antifreeze you have, the worse your cooling system will work. I've talked with a my ASE certified manager at work about this before and he said that you could possibly run an 80/20 mix of water/antifreeze. The reason you wouldn't run straight water is that antifreeze also acts to prevent corrosion. You definately wouldn't want to run this setup in the winter though, since you would drasticly raise the freezing point of the water.

I have seen other Arizonan's run pretty cool with just a 160* thermostat, the fans reprogrammed, and an e-water pump, so that might be a safer route for you to go.

BTW, PLEASE do not try this without getting some backup info, I'm only giving you third hand information, but I hope this helps.

Re: Proper Coolant Ratio

Aside from the cooling issues, anitfreeze also lubricates the seals and water pump. That's why I would not use a "lean" mixture. If the car is in good operating condition, it should have no problem staying within normal operating temperature in that climate.

: )

Some Dexcool is pre-mixed at a 50/50 ratio. You need to look at the instructions on the coolant container to determine if you need to add water, or if it is pre-mixed.

Re: Proper Coolant Ratio

ive also read in a hotrod magazine about a month ago, that using just distilled water and a lil coolant is fine, you just have to add some other mix in there with it and it will cool better. ill find the magazine and read it again.
