Is this a problem with the Opti-spark or the tranny?

Hey everyone. I own an A4 1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with about 130K miles. It's been a perfect car until yesterday. It starts up just fine, and is fine through first gear but when it switches to second it makes a loud clicking sound, stops accelerating *but still stays at the same speed* for about 5-10 seconds and then gradually eases itself into second. This happens whenever it wants to change gears. The car is great other than this, but I was wondering whether this was a problem with the opti-spark or does this sound like the transmission? What exactly is wrong with it? How much would it cost for it to be repaired?

Put the engine in park and lug the gas a couple of times while the car is WARMED UP. If the engine revs freely, it's isolated to your drivetrain. If it sputters around before revving up, it's your ignition- your opti won't cause too many problems at light load, it's under heavy load especially at low rpms is where you'll see major problems.

Thanks,
I didn't drive it after what happened yesterday, but decided to take it for a spin today after warming it up. For some reason it's running just fine now? I don't see how something like what happened yesterday could just go away? Could the heat make it act like that for some strange reason? It's never done anything like this before. I just hope it never starts up again...should I still get it checked out?

Damnit, now it's happening again. I just took out the garbage and the same problem, but it only occured from switching from second to third and then from third to fourth. The engine revs freely when in park. What is the problem, then? How much would it cost to have it fixed?

So is the tranny slipping? Or is it just refusing to shift quickly?
Either way, it could indicate serious problems with the tranny.
Trannies don't like heat much; the problem could get more serious over time. I would either take it in now for a diagnosis or see if the problem gets any worse over the next few days.

Just curious, have you checked the fluid level in your tranny? Start simple, then get complex.

Here is an update on my situation...
Tranny fluid is fine. It seems that the car will run fine for a while, but then after a little while it will start repeating that same problem. Again, it hesitates at the switching of the gears, makes the loud clicking sound for several seconds and THEN switches into the next gear. I did the test that someone recommended earlier and thought that it was revving freely, however yesterday I decided to park it, warm it up and then give it quick, deep revs. That's when I heard the clicking sound once again for a split second before it continued revving. That might sound confusing, sorry...when I rev it quickly, it sounds normal for the beginning part of the rev, then makes the clicking sound, then continues to complete the rev normally. I dunno how else to put it, really. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I hope to **** that I don't need a new tranny...I can't afford it

Awesome! How much did that cost you? My biggest fear is that I need a new tranny. If that happens, i am just going to sell my Z and try my best to find a really cheap LT1 in decent condition. You mentioned that you only drove it for about three miles, though. See, mine seems to act OK for a short distance. However, after it has warmed up it starts acting up again. I just took it for another spin about a mile up the road and back and it didn't seem bad, it only made the clicking sound and hesitated a few seconds at 1600 rpm before shifting into the next gear. I really dunno what the problem is. I was hoping that others could help me out on this because I don't want some tranny shop telling me immediately that I need another transmission and trying to rape me price-wise

sounds like it MIGHT be the tranny. But there shouldnt be a problem when you rev it in park or nuetral. If you rev it in park and its okay, that doesnt necesarily mean its not your opti, because just revving it puts no load on the car,it might still be ignition related.
