Post probably a stupid question, but

whenever you replace your opti, do you need to set the #1 cylinder to TDC?

No you do not . The opti will only go in one way, with the cam drive pin inserted in the drive hole. If your camshaft timing was set right with the timing marks on the sprockets aligned everything will be OK.
