Question pro 5.0 shifter dust boot question

Hi, just installed pro 5.0 in my 95 Z28, great shifter! Had one question: I cut the stock boot opening and slid it down underneath the gold stop collar, to seal the shifter from the outside of the car. But, do I need some sort of dust cover for the top of the shifter mechanism. My main concern is debris/dust from the interior getting into the mechanism area and getting stuck in all that clear grease that lubes the shifter. I know that the console and leather shift boot "generally" cover the shifter, but I think a lot of stuff could find its way in there. Also, I've heard of some people putting thread locker on the 4 bolts that mount the shifter base. Is this necessary or just and extra precaution? Thanks for any info!

I have the same issue with mine. And yes, an alarming amount of debris does get into the shifter which worries me. I have been thinking about trying to use the boot from a Hurst Billet Plus shifter. I think the diameter of the base is a bit larger on the Pro 5.0, but I think it will stretch out to fit.

It's a glaring omission on the Pro 5.0, I can't believe they didn't include one. After owning both a Hurst and the 5.0, I personally feel the Hurst was built considerably better, and was higher quality overall. Shifting differences between the two are minimal, although the 5.0 does seem a bit smoother (my Hurst had dual springs on both sides, but it originally only had a single spring on one side -- I called and asked for the spring upgrade).

I e-mailed pro 5.0 customer support and asked them the same questions posted above, here was their reply:

"you DONT need a dust cover
AND you dont want ANYTHING tugging on the handle
or jammin the stop BOLTS"

I thought that an additional top dust cover might pose problems with handle travel and/or stop bolts, but I'm also concerned that the grease in the shifter mechanism is going to be a magnet for all kinds of questionable debris. I guess for simplicity's sake I'll probably go with what PRO 5.0 recommends and leave it alone, as this is the easier thing to do anyways .
