Question Powerband of a 230/242 or 236/242 XE Cam??

Has anyone w/ one of the above mentioned cams ~ dynoed it yet? I just recently installed a 233/242 on a 114lsa in my car. Not only did I lose power EVERYWHERE <- compared to my 230/236 / .598/.608 / 110lsa - but the HP peak also dropped down about 400 rpms. I figured I'd lose some power, but not an average of 15rw / 20rwtq. Furthermore, I expected to be able to pull to at least 6600... Well, it's what I was hoping for anyway.

Ah well.. My car has good brakes again. LOL

I think it's the LSA that's the culprit. The new cam has less overlap than the "old" cam, just eyeballing the numbers. What's the advertised duration on both cams? Also, are your springs up the the job?

Thanks Rich...

The old cam's "advertised #" <- I assume you mean "rated" right? That's what I'm figuring, they just show it as rated.. Anywhoo... The old cam were the Comp 3111/3122 lobes. Duration shown to be 286/290. The current cam lobes are Comp 3442/3317.. 283/293 respectively. In addition, my old cam had an IC of 106* + 4. The new one is 111* + 3. I remember a post from a while back stating where IC's above 110* were shown to lose considerable power when compared to cams cut on a 106* and 108* IC. Guess this sure did bite me in the *** now eh?

The valvetrain is just fine w/ the cam. Well, it should be... LOL. I had to get it sorted out w/ the old cam so I could rev that sucker out. Currently it consists of Cmotorsport EX618 valvesprings - all installed @ 1.800.. Comp Pro Magnum rockers w/ 7/16 studs, Comp R lifters, Chromoly 7.150 pushrods and titanium retainers.

Hopefully this cam will react good on the bottle. I'd hate to have wasted all the time installing it to lose on every angle. Ha..

Again, it does have good brakes. LMAO!

I'm with Rich... That's what's hurting you for an NA application.

I bet it does better on the juice. A good bit more exhaust duration + less valve overlap

Have fun

Shawn, how ported are your heads? I remember you calling them "home ported" in another thread and you made good power with the old cam. How would you guess they compare with a job from LE or Ai? I'm just curious. Sorry, I don't have much help for your current problem.

The heads were cleaned up by S.A.M. a few years ago... Last year I had Jordon port out an intake/exhaust port for me - and I tried to copy/match it on the others.... There's prolly quite a bit more that can be done, I was just weary of hitting a water jacket. Unfortunately I'm a cheapass and never had them flowed, so I don't know what kind of flow numbers they have so I can't really compare that way.

Going by dyno numbers..... They're pretty close to a car I've seen dyno w/ LE heads. Actually.. W/ my old cam - I had the car beat everywhere across the band except on peak #'s I think.

Eventually I'll bite the bullet and go for some real heads and convert to SR. There's not much more I can do anymore. I've already taken enough steps backwards. LOL

I'll be spraying the pig as soon as I get my dig. 6 back from MSD. See what kind of improvments it made there.

I've got the EX 236/242 on a 112lsa. On the dyno it peaked at 6,400.

Hmm.. Mine's right at about 6200... Guess I'll need some 28's again since revving this cam out is proving to be useless.
