Power steering failure, need advice.
Power steering failure, need advice.
Hello everyone,
Today on the way home from a business trip my 93 TA's power steering stopped working on a tight curve (yes I've changed my shorts
).
I pulled into a parking lot, lifted the hood and there was power steering fluid spattered all over the engine. The belt didn't squeal at all as a drove it a couple blocks to park it. And, judging by the splattered fluid I'm assuming the belt was still moving and now seized. I'm wondering if anyone can tell by these symptoms if it might just be a blown hose, or if the power steering pump is toast. It was a little too dark to see where the leak was but there was a nice puddle under the car where I parked.
If anyone can give me some suggestions on how to diagnose the problem tomorrow in the daylight, I would really appreciate it. How many hoses are there to check? What are some visible signs that pump is bad.... that sort of thing.
Thanks in advance for all the help.
I really appreciate it.
Kyle

Sounds like a hose. Pumps don't typically blow apart. I believe that in our cars that there is one pressure hose(pump to gear) and one return hose.(gear to pump) Running the pump without fluid may have damaged it also, but it was probably a hose that blew in the first place

If the problem is a bad hose, and i'm hoping it is.... how easy is it to detect the leak?
What is the best way to go about finding where the fluid is coming from. Do i need to put more fluid in and start the car to find the leak.... will the fluid still leak if i have the car on ramps and am not actually turn the steering wheel?
Thanks again for the replies.
