power steering failure

bro's 1995 z28 was driving, he was turning a corner, heard some sounds he described as small rocks hitting the car, then the power steering quit working...

he said no groans while turning prior to this, he doesnt do donuts or beat on the car....

he's gonna check the power steering fluid color when he gets home to determine if that was the problem. he's under carmax warranty, so it's fine, but i'd like to know what might have caused this.

im thinking pump just gave out, and the cracking sound was the pump locking up

EDIT:

he just got home, opened the hood... the auxillary drive belt is GONE...

he said "there's 4 pulleys and nothing on them looks like alternator, power steering, and 2 more"

how much damage could he have caused driving 30 minutes without a secondary drive belt... im guessing a/c, powersteering, waterpump, and power steering, but i dont know abiout the camaro's belts so i dont know

Re: power steering failure

no damage at all would ahve occured. only things that run off of them serpentine belt are power steering, a/c, alternator.... yeah thats it. thats the beauty of these cars, break or lose the belt and its no big deal, he may have just had the belt snap on it or shoot off. in that case make sure the belt tensioner is in good working order
