Maybe everyone else is crazy or I'm just misunderstanding. You positively already snapped a timing chain, and now even with the replacement you are having problems, correct??? It seems to me if everything was running fine, you snapped a timing chain, and now you have problems it's more than likely a problem associated with the valvetrain and not the opti or anything else

There's an extremely good chance that something was messed up in the valvetrain and your only logical option right now is to start the teardown to diagnose. Hopefully it's just a matter of some bent pushrods, although if the valves were bent you are going to need the heads removed for new guides and valves (and time for a port job!). Start by removing the intake manifold and checking the pushrods. If it were me I would also do at least a simple check on the valves by removing the springs, and checking the valves for unimpeded vertical movement and no sideplay. Something did give and now you've just got to get dirty

I double checked the firing order on the OPTI and plugs last night. Also upon a quick inspection I see no spring/rocker/or pushrod damage other than one rocker being loose and needing to be tighened down some. I will triple check the firing order and upper valve train componenets tonight. When the motor is running (yes it does run but barely) the SES light blinks on and off and it ticks pretty good from the valve area.....

Thanx for all the info guys.....keep it comin!

Brad

Also I did remove one rocker (the one that loose) and the pushrop isn't bent but wiggles back and forth inside the head (guides maybe?)

My point Buttercup, was that it could just be anything. If you did as much reading as I did when I first started this board, you would know of the messed up opti timming install issues. They have happened and have been posted.

If you really do not want to tear it down unless absolutly sure you have to, do a leakdown test pronto. You will likely not "see" any noticeable damage just by taking the valve covers off. I bent the s*** out of my 4cyl valves and the only way I new I did it was by the missing retainers. If it is light damage, you could experiance a running engine with crappy results.

I just read on a thread that the blinking light is a possible misfire. Dont quote me on that cause the other thread wasnt sure either but fairly posotive. They also mentioned something of something about the opti, but one step at a time, ehy??

Yeah I know the blinking SES light is indeed a misfire. The OPTI is brand new from Jason Cromer so I hope that isn't the case. Can the blinking light be from a mechanical part (failure) or does the SES light only blink with an ignition misfire such as reversed wires or a bad OPTI, you know something electrical? How smart is an OBDII CPU?

I have always wondered myself how they could detect a misfire. I figure that unless there is a sensor on each plug wire, how it do that???

Now, I COULD understand that if the opti was off, it could be referanced to/by the crank sensor since there is a special gap in the opti to let the computer know when it is at #1(?) firing. Now, because of this, I am NOT saying it is the opti (this time). I just wonder how it all knows a simple plug wire is changed wrong.

Computers are only as smart as the program thats in them, but, sticking to the info that is programmed in them and assuming all the sensors work, there one smart little bastard. Now, if a sensor goes bad, its not thier fault. Its like if I told you I would give you a million dollars for your car if you brought it to me now. You know something is not right and you have to use your best judgement. You could just say "BS" (which would be the check engine light) or, you could try to work with what you have going on. Same with the computer.

I really cant answer if it could be from a mechanical standpoint, as like I said, I dont know how a misfire detection works, off the top of my head. I am sure its possible though.

A blinking SES light indicates a "major" emissions problem, misfires included. The OBDII PCM uses the CPS to detect misfires. The CPS monitors the acceleration of the crankshaft. If the crank does not accelerate as it should after a piston has reached TDC it knows that that cylinder did not fire correctly. A stuck EGR, bad gas, ignition problem, bad MAF, cam lope, bad rings, bad valves, etc. can all trigger the misfire code.

Go butter cup!!

Well, that sucks!! Now we have 3 variables. Major emmissions, mechanical & electrical.

Leakdown teeeeeest !!!!!!!! :blah:

If im understanding this correctly....you broke your timing chain driving down the road...replaced it without checking anything else in reguards to the valve train and now its running like crap.

If this is the case then you more than likely have some bent valves from breaking the timing chain. Listen to buttercup and start tearing that thing apart. And yes a compression test will verify this.

And to get one more thing straight....You CANNOT throw you timing off by installing the opti wrong. It only goes on ONE way.

Alright then, thanx for all the imput guys. I'm going to double check the firing order (which I'm sure is correct) and then begin the teardown process. I have some good install guides, a digital camera and a decent amount of money to work with. I'm about 90% sure there are damaged valves so everything will be replaced with upgraded parts. I appreciate everyone providing info.

If you do a 3 year search, you will find the posts I am talking about. It has been done and it can be done, its been posted. What else can "I" say? I wasnt the one who installed the opti wrong, I just read it, here, on camaroz28.

Just because something is posted on here doesnt make it fact. I would say at least 75% of the users on here are novice weekend mechanics, so a lot of times explanations are a little hard to understand and get taken out of text. Then you have another group on here that never work on their cars but think they should own their own speedshop with their posts. Research is good but at some point you have to apply it. Go outside and pull your opti off and you will see it goes back on one way, regardless of what you read on here.

I have pulled it. As a matter of fact, I have disasembled it all the way to the last bearing on the inside, and, was able to clean the lens on the pickup. I am still running strong with 15k since, so, "I" am okay and know what I am doing, or at least I do everything right even if I am fooling myself, but that cant be if I can rebuild a 700r-4. Maybe I am just a lucky dilusional individual??

The opti goes on one way, but the dowel alignment or something can get screwed up. I admit, its very hard to do if you know what you are doing, but to someone that doesnt have a clue I guess it CAN be done. Like I said, it was posted, and, if I remember correctly, was also posted as a warnning of just something to be "aware" of.

I cant give specifics because it has been too long ago to remember what posts it was in (2rs to be exact). I do remember that it did give me the ****** cause I didnt want to do it wrong either. Like I said though, if you dont have a f***n idea what your doing, it doesnt suprise me.
