You should be able to do it yourself. It should be r134a, and you can by a recharge kit at any parts store.

if it leaked out, then you obviously need more then just refrigerant. Find out why it leaked, fix that, then you can recharge it.

First, find and fix the leak=part charge with ac dye.
After you fix the leak you need to at least evacuate the system, then recharge, a new reciever/drier would be nice.

Recharging is easy, walmart or meijer sells the cheapest recharge kits. They usually come with a sealer or die to help find the origina leak as well. Have fun and good luck!

Drop Top Steve is right. You need to evacuate the system before you fill it up. Pull a good vacuum on it to eliminate moisture and contaminated air.

Maybe the CORRECT way is to E-vac the system but I have recharged many cars without doing so and never had any problems. My Cavalier has a small leak, I recharge it every spring but it lasts all season. No problems and cools extremly well.

I'm in the commercial HVAC/Refrig. business and if you have 100% lost the refrigerant charge you really should evacuate the systems and change out the drier. If it is just low and not cooling as well as it used to (some gas is still in the system) you are OK with a top off charge. If it is completely empty, air and moisture has probably gotten into the system and it won't get as cool as it should due to mixed gases and the discharge pressures can be too high (non-condensables) and greatly shorten the life of your compressor.
