possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue
possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue woodruff key issue
Today i put the timing set on, i completly seated the crank gear as far as it can go, but the woodriff key did not protrude past the crank gear...it is flush with the crank gear itself. My car is a 1996 with the crank position sensor reluctor wheel, and there isnt enough woodriff key to secure the reluctor wheel. So, should i delete the crank position sensor and use a 1995 or below hub?
well i measured the distance from the crank snout to the crank gear and its 1.340...does that sound right? am i on the right track????
I guess i should just measure the inside distance of a 1995 hub and that will let me know if i can use the hub to hold on the crank gear.
any ideas....any input really appreciated.

Re: possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue
Does any of the woodruff key come out past the crank gear at all or is it complelety 100% flush? Would you be able to fit one of these on there in place of the CPS wheel?

Re: possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue
I've got a hub off of a 94 here that I just measured. It is 1.450 from the part that would seat against the crank gear to the part that would rest against the end of the crank snout. So I guess that means that the CPS wheel should be about 0.110 thick. 1.450 (94 hub) - 1.340 (96 hub)

Re: possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue
If the crank gear is all the way on and it is flush with the woodruff key, then you should be able to run your 96 hub. When you put it on it is supposed to rest against the woodruff key. The 93-95 hubs are longer but the woodruff key on those years is back cut more to compensate for it.
Re: possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue
Your stock balancer has no key so the key would stop at the sprocket.
Check the alignment of the crank sprocket with the cam sprocket. The crank sprocket may not have enough champher to go on as far as it should. If the chain alignment is right then the belt alignment will tell ya if it's to far in/out. Some chain sets can't run the wheel for the "misfire" sensor and it has to be left out.Just run the sensor in the hole.

Re: possible problem with new motor...crank hub issue
stroked383z28, its a new GM timing set, i think it should be ok...ill measure everything really good. I just got a little nervous....thanks for your help...
1racerdude, yes, the woodruff key does not run the balancer....but it does run the CPS. When the motor was stock...during my cam swap i noticed the key protruded the crank gear just enough to hold the cps reluctor wheel on securely.
