Ported heads need work?
Re: Ported heads need work?
I've just ported a set of LT1 and had them flow benched. Some of the standard, very basic and easy mods that really picked up my heads look like they've been done OK . Can only tell much from pictures.
To be clear, I'm no expert. I have actually used a flow bech a little and ported numerous sets of heads with what I'd call good performance. From the experience I've had with my most recent set (LT1 heads that were flow tested before and after the porting)_I think you should take a look at the short side radius ( where the intake port floor turns down to meet the valve seat .) If they didn't mess with this very much you'll probably have a nice improvement over stock. Probably not a 280cfm race head but a nice improvement in power across a wide RPM range.
If the short side was totally butchered the head may be hardly any better off than a stocker. could even be worse overall. If someone in your area flow tests them I'd recommend spending a few dollars and getting a couple pairs of ports tested. Then you'd have a much better idea about how they might work and what they might need to fix any weak areas.
Good luck Michael.

Re: Ported heads need work?
What did you pay for those? Did you ask to see some pics before the purchase?
The best advice I , personally can give you is get them to a pro. and see if they can clean them up for you. It would more than likly cost somewhere around 200 to 400 more dollars. But it would be $ well spent.

Re: Ported heads need work?
well they came with a bunch of other stuff I bought, no I didn't ask for pics. They seem to have changed hands a few times, so I'm not sure that the person I bought them from knew any better. That aside the name ellis is on the sides of them. I don't know if this is a person or some kind of acronym. But yeah I'm kind pissed but I got a deal for the other parts that came with the heads.

Re: Ported heads need work?
Flow bench them first before spending huge $$$ on extra porting or sending out. make sure they do all 8 for consistancy reasons and have also have your chamber size checked too.
Re: Ported heads need work?
I think they look pretty good! They did a really good job around the valve guides especially, and blending in the valve job. It's hard to tell how high the tops have been raised, what the short-side looks like, and how thin the pushrod pinch point is, though.
Flow them before spending any money.
