Popping Sound ???
Popping Sound ???
Recently after a tire rotation, when i accelerate reverse from stopping point a i hear a popping noise coming from the front of the car, sounds like its coming from the front left or right brakes or somewhere right behind them. Any ideas what this is ? brakes? bearings ? (someone sprayed WD-40 all over inside front calipers, could this do it ?)
Also brakes are noisy (sqeak, squeak) intermidently, usualy when taking turns or coasting. I installed new rotors and pads (crap ones from DAP, i think thas the problem lol) and it started right after that. I think its because the caliper isnt opening back up all the way after brakes are applied, i put silicone brake quiter all over the caliper pistons and moving points. Helped for about 2 days then sounds came back. Any suggestions?
Finally, my throwout bearing (i think) is going bad, its very loud when clutch is being released during acceleration. I think its my TO bearing because you can faintly hear the same scratchy raspy sound if you just push the clutch in when in neutral. Any thoughts about softning the noise without replacing throwout?

One possibility for the popping noises are your front lower ball joints - they make popping noises when they go bad.
Did you put the brake quiet goo on the pads themselves? I have never had a problem with noise when doing that.

I think its my ball joints or bushings? Can anyone give me some step by step directions in diagnosing ball joints or bushings. I dont know suspension too well. Also, would the noise come from someone incorrectly jacking the car up?
To check your ball joints you have to put the car on a lift and grab the tire on each side about the 3 o clock and 9 o clock positions, then try turning it lightly from side to side if you feel a little movement in the tire/wheel before the wheel actually starts turning it is bad. I know i didn't make much sense but I can't really explain it, it's something you kind of have to see to know what i am talking about.
I believe I might have the same problem
I was checking out the national highway safety and traffic administration ( or something like it) website www.nhtsa.dot.gov and came across some complaints made to them from consumers concerning problems with the calipers resulting in similar noises.
I can't offer any first hand advice, but it might be worth checking out.

The sight itself is a pain to search (for me atleast, I hate computers :-) It will just tell you what complaints have been made. You can search by year make and model, but as far as reading the reports of performed research... you have to request and pay for them. But it's good if you want to know nationwide what other people are experiencing and reporting about their cars.
