PLEASE help me diagnos this problem
PLEASE help me diagnos this problem
I'll try to make it short. Went for a short drive and the car starting bucking at low rpm and wanting to turn off. However it never cut off until I pulled up in front of a buddy's house who I got to look at it. I started it back up and it idle's really rough for a sec around 4-500 then cuts off. The check guages light comes on right as cuts out. If you can just rev it high enough and slip the clutch to avoid it stalling once you get going it runs OK above 2 grand. We are thinking EGR is clogged up with carbon. What do you guys think?? Please offer some suggestions. Scott please chime in and add anything important.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it,
Stephen

Hey guys, I drove the car last night. I am thinking maybe its Egr, My Blazer would do the same thing when the egr was the problem. If you drive the car hard and then let it idle it will idle fine for about a half a second an then drop down to 700-800 and cut off. The car is not loading up, so I dont think it is a fuel problem or 02 sensor problem. Above 2 grand or so with a steady acceleration the car runs fine, just like it always has.

Welp, the plan was I was to take it to Auto Zone and get the codes ran. Ain't happening. The car is UNDRIVABLE, it wouldn't make it out of the driveway it's cutting out so bad. I would really appreciate any opinions as to what the problem is. I am pretty certain like Scott said it's the EGR. but...
Well, EGR solenoid is around $35, and the EGR valve is around $60...
My EGR is acting up, and it idles rough, but it's doesn't die on me.
I suppose if the EGR valve is stuck open, that it might be possible to create too many problems idling and the car could die, but I'm not sure about that.
Why not pull the EGR valve off and check it for vacuum? If you can push it too easy, it's bad. If you push it in and plug the holes and it comes back out, it's bad. I believe you are also supposed to be able to put a piece of vacuum hose on the port on the valve, and suck on the hose to open the valve.
I have heard that you can clean them. If it just feels a little gritty, you might try that and save the $60 for the time being.
Wish I could be more help.

The EGR valve is located on the back side of the intake manifold. It is on the right side (driver's side). There are 2 bolts that hold it on. That's it. There is also an aluminum gasket behind, sometimes this will stick and won't come off in 1 piece. Good luck.
