? on pistons

Can i use gen-one sbc pistons and rings.in a lt1 block, without changing rods? I think the rings are different from a gen-one to and lt1. I just want to make sure i am thinking right before i order regular pistons and rings that are not specific to a lt1.

Yes you can replace the LT1 specific piston with any other small block Chevy piston. Of course if the new pistons/pin/rings/locks are not the same weight as stock then a new balance on the crank is a good idea.
The stock rods being press-fit piston pins might be a hastle.
A new set of aftermarket rods would make things easier.

One popular piston and ring package is the Mahle PowerPak. The rings are vastly thinner than stock, (1.5mm 1st and 2nd ring and 3.0mm oil rings). The whole piston/pin/ring/lock combo is very weight concious.

I'm sure there are direct replacment piston kits for the LT1 too. FelPro or Speed Pro probably make a kit that is very close to the same weight as the factory original Mahle piston.

Isn't a lt1 externally balanced? So why would the crank need balanced.

If your new pistons are different weight than what is in there now then the crank will need to be balanced to the new weight. And you can keep the external balance flexplate/flywheel if desired but it has to go to the balance shop along with the crank/rods/piston/pins/rings/locks/bearings/flexplate bolts.
