Re: Pioneer billet steel keyed crankshaft hub

Very useful if you are driving a high boost supercharger off the nose of the crankshaft, or have massive HP that might cause the hub to slip on the crank. Or if you have added a timing pointer and a harmonic damper marked with TDC and crank degrees, and are using a timing light to verify timing. Or, if you have screwed up the stock hub and crank nose so that the “interference” fit is now too loose.

For a “bolt-on” setup, it offers no advantage at all. Not a normally observed problem. If it was, GM would have keyed the stock hub.

wouldn't you have to key your crank to use this?
and doesn't that require you to pull the crank to key it right?

The factory crank already has a key way, as do SBC aftermarket cranks.

And it is possible to add a key way (dual key ways, 180° apart are often used in high boost S/C applications) with the crank still in the engine. The ATI hubs had a tendency to crack with a single key, while driving a S/C. A friend with an 1,125 HP high boost LT1 had his ATI break. ATI provided a dual key way hub (which they now sell as an option), and the shop we both use was able to add the second key way to the Callies crank with the engine still in the car.

I had a shop add a key way to the stock hub. It was required because I had added an Electromotive “Opti Eliminator”, and it required adding a 60-tooth crank wheel in front of the stock damper, marking the wheel with TDC and crank degrees, and adding pointer. In that case, a hub slipping on the crank would have had a negative effect.

I'll be using one on my next LT1 build, my other two LT1s both have Fluidamprs on them but for my next mostly stock build I'm going to use this hub along with a Jeg's 18-1 SFI under drive balancer.
