Pickup tubes: 5/8" versus 3/4"

Is 3/4" necessary? Car is a 93 and it came with the 5/8"...just curious. Engine isn't gonna be a screaming 7k rpm monster or anything, just a cam only gm847.

And for the record, there are WAY too many different oil pumps to choose from!

I'm talking about the oil pump pickup, just in case no one knows what I'm talking about!

Let me look around and see what i can find for you on it.

Did you already buy the cam?
For what your wanting a GM847 is a bad choice for you, that cam loves higher rpm and needs to breath threw a good set of heads, theres much better options for you that will still allow some actual low end power still.

Everything is already purchased. Compression was built around the cam to get the DCR in check.

3600 stall should take care of "low end power".

Stock pan. And the pump is what I'm wondering about. Should I get one with 3/4", or 5/8" hole?

There was a recent thread with pump recommendations. I'd go with the 3/4".

After a TON of reading, it seems that Melling makes almost everyone's housing for their pumps. Which would mean they ALL suck!

Can I order a new one and put the parts in my stock housing?

I have a Melling Select pump in my car with the 5/8 pickup, works good.

Wow, I'm surprised you used a 5/8"

Where did you get yours and how much?

Cool.

Do the Melling Selects not have the thin mounting point like the others?

Much nicer pump, hardened internals etc.

I lied my pickup IS 3/4. Mine was a MEL 10555 or something like that.

I recently got a Melling MEL 10550 Select series pump that I am going to use to replace the MEL M55HV that I am currently using. It has a 5/8" pickup.
