Before I ordered my Melling Select HV pump, I called the Melling tech support line. The guy I spoke to suggested that I not use the drive shaft that comes with the model 10550 HV pump but to use their chrome moly drive shaft instead (P/N 12550), which I ordered at the same time. As I remember, it was something like $10-$12 from Summit.

I used the 'regular' tube size canton version #20-020, I believe the 5/8".
Anyway, I have over 1500 road racing miles on the engine using 40 & 50 wt oils screaming around the track between 3500rpm & redline for laps on end. no problems what so ever. so, no, I don't think the 3/4" pickup is necessary

Thanks for the input. Im also wondering if there is a noticeable difference from using a bigger inlet.

According to melling the best pump they have with the 25% Increased volume is the 10555 and that needs a 3/4'' Pickup so thats why i was switching from the 5/8ths to 3/4

Not sure which one comes with that pump, but some of them come with a plastic coupling which is considered a weak point.
