PCM gone wacky

First I failed e-test very badly.

I was throwing 3 codes.

EVAP purge solenoid
EGR solenoid
Knock sensor

I had replaced the knock sensor with the LT4 sensor prior to the e-test, but I didn't change the Knock module in the PCM.

I ordered all the required sensors on monday, but on the way to work I lost all use of the tranny. ie:can only go 5 mph.

I picked up all the parts tuesday, put them in today and the car runs the same.

The mechanic that did the conditional pass told me my PCM could be the main problem.

Question is, now that I can't move the car, can the PCM be tested or re-flashed out of the car?

I have no problem buying a new one, but the dealer said they need the car to program it to stock form.
If this is the case than how does PCMforless do a mail order business?

It's a 95 Z28 only real mods are hooker shorties with a 3" Magnaflow cat and 3" Flowmater from cat back.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Allen

Re: PCM gone wacky

Is this a california car?

You should check all your connections before putting in a new PCM. Check the VSS connector and the main plug at the tranny, and then check the connections to the purge solenoid and the conenctions at the EGR solenoid. Also, you might want to loosen the 2 bolts holding in the PCM and check the conenctions there, although those are probably fine.

Check to make sure you haven't smashed or burned any wiring harnesses. Get your knock circuit back correct.

If you can find a buddy with a scanner cable, load up some software in a laptop and see just what does work, as opposed to what doesn't.

Re: PCM gone wacky

If you actually put in a knock sensor from an LT4, it will not be compatible with your OBD-I (95) PCM. The LT4 sensor is OBD-II. OBD-I and II sensors are different impedances. There is no need to change the sensor anyway. It's the knock module that everyone changes to an LT4 (and it is compatible with OBD-I or II). You need to run a knock sensor that matches the OBD type of your PCM.

Dealers are not setup to reprogram PCMs outside the car like the aftermarket reprogrammers are.

Re: PCM gone wacky

Thanks Shoebox

I now fell like a real dumbass. I asked a few weeks back if I changed the knock module would I have to have the PCM programed. Your answer was "no it's plug and play". So what do I go and do, I CHANGE THE WRONG PART".

Let this be a lesson to others and don't ask vauge(sp) questions like I did originally.

Thanks again, Allen

Re: PCM gone wacky

Shoebox help again PLEASE

I just put the LT1 knock sensor back in and I have no more codes.

BUT, I still do not have use of the tranny. The tranny was rebuilt 3 yrs ago with Vette servos and a TransGo shift kit. If I put it in gear my rmps drop very slightly and I have to rev the **** out of it to go 1ft. it also happens in reverse.
No smell, tranny fluid looks ok to me, no clunking from rearend and no leaks on garage floor.
BTW it is an A4.

Also when this all happened (with the tranny) I had just went WOT to pass someone on the hwy and that was it, no bang, no breaking noise, just no power. When I pulled over to check for anything that may have been broke, I saw nothing. Tried to drive away and had nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Allen

I'm no transmission expert, but sounds like the converter, pump or something pressure related. You might want to start another post in the drivetrain forum.
