Pass. side PaceSetter header hits motor mount??

Ok, so here is the deal....

I sell my Hooker LTs, and replace them w/ PaceSetter LTs. They went in very easy, and hardly even brushed the fender wells, which was great. We get the ypipe in, and get everything bolted back up. The only issue is that I will have to drive to the exhaust shop to get 6" extra pipe welded in, b/c the PaceSetter ypipe is not long enough to reach my Borla catback. (So I need about 6" of pipe welded onto the end of my ypipe.)

HERE is the problem. One of the primaries on the pass. side headers is against/laying on the motor mount. And when cranked, it bangs the hell out of that motor mount.

Anyone else run into this problem?? What did you do about it? Do I need to take the header back off and dent it? OR, do I need to try to cut that piece of mount it's against?

Also, the driver's side ypipe, where the ypipe joins to the header collector, bangs the floor board. Does the ypipe need to be dented in further??

Everyone has always bragged on this brand of header. I was to, until I cranked it tonight, and the damn primary bangs against the pass. side motor mount

EDIT: I have included a link to a pic below if this problem.

Please help!!

Thanks!

my passanger side doesnt have that problem, they cleared everythng good. The y-pipe on the other hand banged the floor when i got on it. I put exhaust wrap around it to cushion it and it wasnt bad after that.

Did you replace the motor mounts while you had easy access? When i had my original motor in my car I had no issues with the header hitting the motor mount (ES poly mounts). However when i put a new golen engine in there that had the block decked and heads milled a bit it brought the headers down just enough to cause them to rub against the motor mount under acceleration. I removed the little bit of material from the clamshell and reinstalled. No more rubbing. I also had to dent the y-pipe more to get it to stop banging against the floorboard. Good luck.

I would say if you didn't replace the motor mounts, that may be the problem. Otherwise, as mentioned above, I have heard of people having to notch their motor mount clamshells. I was fortunate enough where I didn't have any clearance issues with my Pacesetters.

I put in Energy Suspension Poly motor mounts in my car when I did my rebuild.

put the pacesetters in and noticed that the pacesetters were NOT lined up right because the primary was against the clamshell. I had the K-member out so I jus unbolted the headers and had them off in about 5 minutes, and just took a dremmel and grinded down the clamshell. You could also dent the primaries but why do that when you can just grind down the clamshell a bit and save yourself that dent in your header?

Doesn't take long. Only took about 10-15 minutes with the dremmel and a carbon fiber bit. Make sure you leave enough room so that even when you hit the gas, you won't have the header banging the clamshell when the motor shifts a bit to the pass. side

Thanks for the replies all! I thought about it last night, and I figure that is what I will have to do, grind down on the clamshell. I didn't want to have to dent the primary, and mess up that coating. I just dread having to take the header back out to grind on that clamshell. I swear I didn't see it against that mount when we installed them. HOW annoying.

Thanks for the help so far

Yeah, its aggravating. I had to pull that header back out once I found that the EGR tube and tranny dipstick would not clear each other, just to heat up the fitting and bend it an inch towards the firewall for clearance. The drivers side would have been much easier to do.

Well, luckily I don't have EGR any more to worry about. And the tranny tube didn't give me any issues either.

Whenever something is supposed to be easy, my car makes it hard.

BTW, it's a 95Z, since I didn't mention it earlier.

I did run out to the garage at lunch and take a couple of pics of this issue, to make this thread more understandable. I took a couple of pics, but this pic should say it all:

If I could do this somehow w/ the header still on, it would be awesome.....

It's touching just enough to make it chatter horribly when cranked.

Well, at least the driver's side isn't hitting. It's clear almost an inch. I just can't understand this. HOW annoying though.

I really thought I would like the Pacesetters...

pacesetters are well known because they are inexpensive and they flow pretty well. but, they are cheaper because the coating sucks and the quality is junky. pacesetter has always been known for sub-mediocre products, but their lt1 long tubes got big by being cheap and flowing well. bottom line, they work and are inexpensive witha nice big flange, but i would get jet hots next time around.
