Angry Over Reved!

ok well i was called out by one of the fastest cars at my school and we raced and i beat him by alot but at the end of the race i took my car outa gear to slow downand my engine kept reving!!!i was like WTF! i taped the gas pedlle and my engine tached out the factory tach.. it was somewhere in the mid 7's according to my monster tach it ran at that high RPM for a good 6 seconds befor i turned the motor off, smoke was everywhere... i poped the hood and saw one of the screws from my inlet elbow caught the throttle body return cable and caused my car to go WOT.. so i fixed it by moving the band over so it woudlnt get caught agin. I drove the car off and it would make a clicking sound at low rpms as i drove up to 3k to shift.. u cant hear the click/tip sound at idle.. only under load or when i rev it.. what u guys think happend??? I think i collapsed one of my STOCK lifters from the over reving.. god this pisses me off my engine only has 8k miles on it :-/

well thanks for all your help.

Yea, anything over 7K RPMs and the PCM is just going to maintain the same spark advance, timing, and pulsewidth it had when it hit 7K. Basically, ur not going to pick up any power past 7K, ur just spinning ur rotating assembly harder.

U might have damaged ur valvetrain. I would look for bad lifters or bent pushrods. Check your springs and rockers too

Why was your car revving past 7K? Wow. Do you know where your limiter is set at?

Something else to consider is you may have been running lean at that RPM without any injector upgrades. Maybe do a teardown and look at your heads/pistons.

So sorry to hear that. For some reason, I have always have been spooked by high RPM engine damage (because that is what caused me to rebuild?)

Can you say REV LIMITER?
Anytime you have ANY kind of money in a motor then you should have an aftermarket rev limiter on it.
I went with an Accel 300+ box with my rev limit set at 6250. (I had the stock limiter upped to 6500)
I am assuming you upped the factory limiter real high and just assumed you would not over rev it? or did the factory limiter malfunction?

go outside and find out. Pull your valve cover off. I am guessing probably bent some pushrods
