Original block...way to check it?
#2
There is a derivative of the original vehicle's VIN embossed into the rear edge of the block, and a matching number on the tranny. Shoebox has a photo showing the location of the engine VIN derivative on his website.

Is their anything "official" from GM that states that is what that number means? Just asking b/c my brother is fighting a case now with a local shop that charged him a core charge b/c they said his was not rebuildable, but then stuck the SAME damn block back into the car. The numbers match the VIN/Trans case, everything. Someone that represents the shop claimed that you can't tell by that.
I know thats pure BS, but just need something official if you know what I mean.
Appreciate the help guys!!!!

thats BS...
they are numbered like that for a reason. They are numbered so you know what engine and what trans were in what car.
Your bro should win that case without even going to court... any lawyer should have that thrown out based on stupidity
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) ID's the car. The serial number of the block and the trans are also the serial number of the car. Serial number is the last 6 numbers (I think, could be wrong) of each ID.
I believe its law that all vehicles in the US are numbered with these ID's. All vehicle manufactures number their vehicls, engine and trans. Helps with fighting theft.

thats what im trying to figure out because i believe my block was a 4bolt and i heard they only got 4 bolts with the replacement motors and the only way to get another 4bolt is find and LT4 or the rebuilder used an LT4 block

BTW, I have a 4 bolt block in use with my new SR motor. I bought it on Ebay and it came out of a vette.

If it had no stampings (and they were not purposely ground off), then it was a replacement block and was likely 4 bolt main because of that.

ALL Corvettes had 4-bolt blocks. They are not unique to the LT4.
