Optispark question
Optispark question
Found the leak that was causing me pain...water pump seal not installed correctly..either way...
Using carb cleaner, I cleaned the whole front of the timing cover.
I then may have made a big mistake..I sprayed -off the optispark unit with the same carb cleaner and I may have gotten some cleaner to go down inside the connector.
Does anyone think I may have ruined the unit?
Could I take it apart and check it for any residue and clean it out?
Is the optical unit hosed?
Looking for advice / opinions.
Thanks

Re: Optispark question
You indicate you got it wet with cleaner, but are there any symptoms of a problem - rough running, misfires, hard starting, etc.? If you have a problem, you will know it. If it's running OK, you don't have a problem.
Re: Optispark question
to replace the seal in the timing chain cover for the water pump you have to remove the water pump and the opti. At this point I would also replace the opti seal and pull the opti apart and replace the cap and rotor and do any clean up of the opti. If it's the original water pump then it would be good insurance to replace that also.
Re: Optispark question
Glad I replaced the opti...
My original unit was in pretty poor shape.
Took the unit apart last night, and that thing was as dirty as could be. From the contacts being scaled & pitted to the oil and dirt, and lastly the bearing was pretty wobbly.
Looking for a replacement bearing, but I read where there are no guide grooves or anything like that when you press the two halves of the shaft apart -- so, I just might forget about the whole thing and just keep the optical sensor as a spare part.
Just thought it would be nice to have a spare unit just in case, but pressing the main shaft back together and getting it right on would be next to impossible. I would imagine that being very critical in terms of engine timing.
