opti spark replacement?

Hello, i have a 94 z28 with98000 miles on the clock.
I'm not really mechanically inclined , but do have some knowledge, well any way i took my car to a local dealership to try to get a proffesional opion as to what is wrong with my car. they informed me that the optispark is going bad! they told me it's going to
cost 1,000-1,100 to fix it!! there claiming the part's alone are 600 dollars the rest is labor doesn't this seem high?? P.S. I tryed to check around for prices on the part's and napa and places like that don't seem to know what an optispark is! is there another name for these part's that the part dealers would be alble to look up in there book's?? mayby a smaller garage would do it if i can locate the proper parts! Thanks Rich

You can call Dal Lambert @ 1-800-362-9494 and tell him that you're a z28.com member and get the best price going on stock GM parts. Or I believe Autozone has the replacement Opti with a pretty good warranty. The install is not for the weak at heart, but is very do-able. Check around and look at Brent F. (Mod.) site on the install before proceeding...

Do not use an aftermarket distributor. You are just looking for problems. If you are confident the shop diagnosed the problem correctly, Dal Slabaugh can sell you a vented opti for $198.00 or an unvented opti for $280.00 not sure what a 94 uses? Shoebox could tell us. Dal's number is 877-448-5451 (toll free) You may want to ask around based on your symptoms if that diagnosis is correct.

You will need water pump gaskets as you will have to remove the water pump to get to the opti. You will also need a special socket to remove the opti (torx socket)

You should also consider doing some other necessary replacements while your there such as plugs and wires.

94 uses unvented, about 280 from:
Jason Cromer: 1-877-726-8295
email: gmparts@samtaylor.com
Sam Taylor Buick/Cadillac Ft. Walton Beach, FL

Also the damper has to come off [ not the hub tho]
Don't get coolant in an opti either[especially the new one]

This sounds like me a few years ago. Before I was smart. Dealer charged me $980 parts & labor cause they said the opti was bad. It ended up being my plug wires having hairline cracks in them.

Check the obvious first. Make damn sure your wires & plugs are good!!! Make Sure!! Don't take it in the ****!!!
Learn from my ignorance & stupidity!!!

Call Jason Cromer if you need parts.

Hello, Thank's guy's for your suggestions i will definatly look into it! does anyone know of any tell tale signs that the opti is bad? I'm kinda at the mercy of the dealer on this one! Oh , I forgot to mention I changed the plugs,wires,o2s filters ect. Also scanned the computer and found no trouble codes!so out of desperation I took it to the dealer.BTW the car's symtoms are as follows skip, rough idle, back fire on decelaration and idle surge when car reaches normal operating temp, also notice a lot of carbon build up in exhaust tip's.sometime seem's to accelate sluggish! does any of this sound like the opti? any feedback will be appreciated. Thank's Rich

sounds exactly like the opti. another sign is that it will buck like a freakin bronco around 2000ish rpms or rattle the car under slow acceleration at normal driving speeds. anyone who is half mechanically inclined and has common sense can do this. this is the first and only major replacment i have done on my car. it went on w/o problems. DO NOT get a rebuilt unit. get a NEW one. Electrical parts arent worth crap rebuilt, esp from advance etc. it would suck to get it in after a day or two and then it die...hit me up on email if you need help. id be more than glad to help.
