opti spark blues

Bought a 97 Z28 and it quit the day after purchace,Investigation revealed spark at coil but none at plugs.Removed distributor and found rotor completly mangled and lying in bottom of cap.I replaced with a new unit(Distributor) and it lasted another couple of day,s and the same thing happened!!The inside of the cap looks like there is not enough room and the rotor rubs until it fails. The opti unit itself is fine so it doesn,t look like the camshaft is forcing the distributor shaft forward so how do I set the rotor/cap clearance??These things are way expensive here and GM has been no help at all.I sure miss the points and condenser from my first Camaro!!

Re: opti spark blues

First, are you using brand new GM optis or rebuilt autozone crap?

Second, check the length of the drive pin coming out of the front of the cam. It shouldn't be more than like .33 past the cam sprocket. That may be shoving the rotor and causing misalignment problems.

Re: opti spark blues

Did the previous owner install a different cam? Comp cams have a tendancy to install dowel pins that are too long which causing the opti to bind and break like you are describing.
