You might want to do a "search" on advanced tech... there are a couple of very long threads there on alternatives to the Opti. The only "true" no-Opti setups have been the Electromotive SDI/Opti-Eliminator (no longer made, and maybe only 20 in existance) and a prototype setup from New England Dyno that used a crank trigger, a home-brew cam position sensor, and a FAST ECU with the eDIS unit to drive the 8 LS1 coils. There is a long thread about the NED setup on the Advanced Tech board right now, resurrected from last year.
But I think you will find that just getting the high voltage function out of the Opti case (as the LTCC does), and using only the optical sensor portion to feed accurate info to the stock PCM or an aftermarket ECU works very well. The "quickest LT1" (9.04@155 in a 3,900# convertible) used the Opti that way, feeding a MoTeC M48Pro, with their IEX 8-channel ignition driver and 8 LS1 coils... I have the same setup. But the LTCC will cost you only 1/10 to 1/5 as much as one of the aftermarket ECU's.
