Opti-spark
It serves 2 functions.
It sends a high resolution and low resolution signal to the PCM which determines the crankshaft position used for timing the spark.
It also contains the rotor and cap to distribute the spark generated by the ICM (ignition control module) and the ignition coil.
If there is a problem with one of the signals to the PCM, you will usually get a code 36.
It is a high failure item (especially on the non-vented models, 94 and earlier). I am on my fourth one.
It is located behind the water pump on the front of the engine and leakage from the water pump can take it out quite easily.
Did I forget anything? I am sure everyone will have something to add on this one. Except GM who should have recalled it years ago!
