Opti purchasing help?

I'm doing a cam and head swap and have 60k on my stock opti. While I was doing this I though changing out the opti might be a good idea. My question is what route should I go? I hear some say it just needs a cap and rotor, others say use the msd opti spark, others say only go with the stock version, and others say dynaspark.

I'd rather not spend the $600 on a whole opti. I'm still used to old school HEI distributors, and the opti is something new to me. Please help!

Previous posts have suggested staying stock on the opti, but you might do the water pump while you are there.I would stay GM on both, only if you like sleeping at night. My o2.

i got the MSD billet unit. it's great other than the rotor's screws weren't tight from the factory. Started missing so I pulled it to see, and it had a millimeter or two of play in either direction and both screws were about 3 threads from coming completely out. I cleaned it up, screwed it back together with lock-tite and it's been flawless since. little pricey of a unit, and many believe that it's unnecessary.

Hey man you can buy the msd which is a great piece no doubt for about five hundred or you can go to summit racing and buy an accel distributor with a warranty for about two sixty and they work very well on my camaro and im pushing about four fifteen horses with now spark problems. Its working better than my factory gm distributor. And if your looking for a cam go to hawksthirdgenparts.com online and they have a list of cams that will work with factory settings while bumping your baseline horsepower and rpms up a little

Do a "search". There are far too many posts on this forum describing major problems with the Accel Opti. Do not buy one. Get a genuine Delphi unit from "thepartsladi" on ebay, for about the same price as the Accel.

For starters, read post #5 in this thread..... then read the whole thread:

The same camshaft will work in any LT1. Most if not all will come with the longer dowel pin that will need to be trimmed for the pre 95 cars.
