Opti plug breakage

I replaced my opti roughly a year ago and converted it to the vented sytle. I examined it and discoverd the cap and rotor were extremly corroded, rust in the optical sensor and one of the prongs had broken off and was stuck in the plug (didn't appear to be a fresh break). After replacment the car ran better but had a pretty constant miss. I have been fighting with this one and off for the last year with no success. The car has probably only seen around 500 miles in the past year (just try and drive it enough to keep things from rusting). Last week on the car suddenly died while driving, never done this before, and wouldn't restart and showing a DTC 16. Checked it out again today I got it to start, running very badly, got a DTC 36. I pulled the electrical plug on the opti and found that a prong had broken off again. Also found a burn plug wire which was probably the source of my orignal miss.

What could be causing the prongs in the opti to give out? Both the opti and the plug were both new. Do any of the aftermarket optis have a better setup?

When you converted to the vented Opti, did you get the correct harness connector?

Is it possible you have battery acid or sulfate buildup from excessive battery venting, corroding the connector?

There does appear to be some corrosion on the opti plug terminals, is that it? What could cause the venting, a short somewhere, poor alternator or battery? I've always suspecting my alternator of being on the weak side, scanmaster reports around 13.3 volts while running, and the battery in the car currently it just a spare since it isn't drove on a regular basis.

Corrosion can form on the pins of the connector either from the battery vent gasses (overcharging is common cause), or from the ozone in the Opti case bleeding out of the connector seal. Are you sure you have the vent system installed and operating correctly? Are there any other parts near the battery that have evidence of corrosion - usually blue-green copper sulfate powder?

I'm reading this and can't believe I've never thought to check my vent setup from the opti.

My thread that no one has replied to!

My car had the same problem. Corrosion all over the plug and it broke. Bought a new one and it still dies.

I understand what corrosion does to a wire, but how does corrosion near/on the battery affect the opti?
