Opti out of time?

The cap and rotor needed replacing on my '94 LT1, and I had an extra new vented opti, so I put the vented cap and rotor on the non-vented opti. I checked and the only differences I see is the vent hole...so it should work the same as the non-vented cap.
I didn't mark the rotor when I took it off the block so when I put it on, wasn't at the same position as when I took it off.
How do you time an LT1?
I put the engine on #1 Compression stroke, but I don't know which point on the cap is #1. There aren't any numbers on the inside of the cap...so you don't know which direction to point the rotor.
How do you time an LT1? What do I do now?

Re: Opti out of time?

Which direction is the rotor supposed to be facing when the #1 piston is at TDC on the Compresssion stroke?

THe opti only goes in one way... I don't believe it has a timing ability... You might have put the cam pin in the wrong hole on the opti.

Re: Opti out of time?

well I put the opti back on....now the injectors aren't firing. Is there any correlation at all, between the opti and injectors that I may have missed? BTW the LT1 is in my '88 Trans Am. Thanks,

Re: Opti out of time?

What exactly did you take apart? Did you remove only the cap and rotor? Did you also remove the rear section from the end of the cam? If you did remove the entire Opti, are you absolutely positive you put the drive shaft back in with the gap-tooth in the correct position? Everyone says "yes" to that question, but at least 10% of the people manage to force the shaft in without the correct positioning.

Did you plug the connector back in if you removed it?

Shoebox has info on his website regarding the orientaion of all the parts:

I'm not sure that sarcasm is really productive here.

Re: Opti out of time?

I took the whole opti off the car, but only replaced the cap and rotor with one from a vented. Everything fit like a charm, I even rigged up a vent hose!
Can you force the opti in without it being correctly aligned? I would think it would damage something. I'm fairly sure that I put it in correctly, but I will check again this weekend. Would that cause the injectors to not fire at all? I was extremely irritated when I wrote that, so that's why. I apologize.

Re: Opti out of time?

Yes, it can be aligned wrong, but would take some force to do that[not a lot.. a lot of people make the mistake of drawing it on tight with the 3 mounting bolts, it should go on with little effort] there's one missing tooth on the opti drive shaft that indexes into the timing cover..
The injectors get the signal to fire from the optical part of the opti..
When my opti went bad it didn't fire injectors....

Re: Opti out of time?

Ok that's very helpful man! I think I might have done that...I did use the bolts to push the opti back in about a cm or so. Yeah...I'm a dumbass. Did I break anything? Please say no!!

Re: Opti out of time?

you could of damaged the opti sucking it back on. I would of just sold the new vented opti and put that money towards a new nonvented.

Re: Opti out of time?

It was a time thing. My car's been down for 6 months, I need it running soon! Well crap, Imma try to take it off Thurs and align it, and see if it'll work. I'm saving up for a Delteq setup, so I was just hoping to get the opti running for temporary use and as a limp home mode as a backup to the Delteq.
How is the Delteq 2 coming? Anyone know if it'll be ready soon?

Re: Opti out of time?

No update on the Delteq 2.

Here is how you align the non-vented opti. Never pull it on with the bolts. Possible damage may occur. It shoud fit flush by hand.

Oh and if there is no signal getting to the PCM from the opti, the injectors will not be allowed to fire.

The linky won't work, but I'm pretty sure that I fubared the opti no aligning it. Do you think it can be fixed or possibly not damaged?

Re: Opti out of time?

Depends how hard you forced the pieces together. Assembled correctly, the shaft just slides into the splines. Crunching the shaft into the hole without the splines aligned correctly, and pulling it down by tightening the bolts could have damaged the bearing, forced the rotor into the cap, or pushed the optical wheel into the sensor.

Have you taken it apart and verified that you incorrectly aligned the splines? Have you looked inside for any signs of damage?
