opti and non related emissions code

Hi, a year ago I inherited a 96 ws6 after my sister crashed it and got scared, she bought a

new beemer and I took the trans am off her hands. No need to now fix all the problems it

had. I have done work on this car over the years and know the lt1 fairly well but not inside

out like i know the l98. my first question is I have changed the plugs on this car a few

times over the years and the #7 cylinder would start to miss about a month later. You can

also hear a loud ticking noise when this happens at anything more than 1/4 throttle. I've

read about optis killing plugs and she did have the water pump apparently leak all over the

place for 3 months, though the car runs relatively ok. i did notice corrosion on the

terminals when i was putting new wires on it last. my questions is what should i replace?

i've seen rebuild kits thats are the cap and rotor and seals but i guess what im really

asking is do i need a new sensor or not, and is there anything else im forgetting.

also the engine is throwing an emissions code P0441 which when i looked up said it was an

emissions code stating system flow during non system purge. there looks like there is this

control box next to the intake manifold which i think is what needs to be replaced, but i

have no idea what its called so it makes it hard to order from GM parts direct...

I'm sorry this read was so long and am grateful for any help.

Re: opti and non related emissions code

A consistant problem we see is a plug loosening up which then leaks. When they do, the untrained ear hears a tick. To me is't unmistakably a chh chh chh sound of the gases blowing past the plug. As soon as this happens, the cylinder misfires.

If you think about it, why would the ignition system have a bad effect on only one plug?

The only fix, and we've tried everything, is to put an insert in the head.

As far as the 441 code, either you have a vacuum leak between the intake and the evap switch, or the evap switch is malfuntioning, or the evap solenoid is stuck. Easy enough to test all 3. I would deal with the plug problem first then worry about this problem.

Good luck
