I'm in the process of builidng a 383 for a 93 camaro and I plan on using one of the cam kits from cmotorsports.com. I was wondering if it is necessary to upgrade to the vented Opti with this setup or is it possible to reuse my existing 93 non-vented opti?

I would personaly recommend and myself would do the 95+ opti conversion swap. If you do a quick search, you'll find a lot of info about it. Lots of people do the swap.

I stayed with my stock Opti. Non-Vented. I have never had an Opti problem so I decided to stay with it. It is really up to you. I didn't think it was justified for the limited amount of driving I do with the car for the extra $$ to spend to make it work.
JMO...

 

It is not necessary to change the opti. You must, however, use a cam gear that has the drive splines for the non vented opti.

 

Ok, great. I'll probably only put about 3000 miles a year on the car. I just wanted to make sure the old non-vented style opti will physically work with the cam I want to buy.

 

Ok, so on a side note, If I go with an electric water pump, what are my timing chain choices with the nonvented opti? Will any aftermarket sets work or will I have to use a LT4 timing set?

Well I just used a stock replacement set. I was budget minded. You can go with at true roller or the LT4 set. I didn't think I needed to go that extreme with my minimal HP I am running & low RPM's I am spinning the motor to.

 

I know the LT4 set runs about $200. I'd like to go with an aftermarket Cloyes or similar true roller (hopefully cheaper). Does anyone have any part number off-hand for a timing set that will work with the non-vented opti and include the proper cam gear?

At the time i built my motor the only option i had was the stock Tmining chain. I could not find one for a 94. I guess i could have used lt4 set, not sure what i was thinking.
