I think you may get a mixed opinion on this. I ran open headers lots and lots of times with my old car. It didnt hurt anything that i could tell except for some peoples ears

Re: open long tubes?

How close are the O2 sensors to the open collectors? If they can see a backwash of air from the open headers, they may screw up the A/F ratio in closed loop, causing the engine to run excessively rich.

If you like to run an open exhaust, just install some dual cutouts. It will be alot easier than unhooking your y-pipe and it will solve the problem of false 02 readings. The ground clearance is a little close on the driver side, but you are cautious about how you take steep inclines and bumps you'll be fine.

Thats what my soon to be setup (within a month or so) is going to be. Long tubes, dual e cutouts, y pipe, stock exhaust. The best of both worlds

Thats what Im currently running Jet hot LTs, DMH e-cutouts bolted on the collectors (well what i ran this past summer) and it didnt work out well at all, the right bank fouled out all the plugs, which in turn fouled out my o2 sensors. Im not sure what I'm going to end up doing this summer, I may just switch to single cutout on the , it was VERY FUN while it lasted. just my $.02.

Re: open long tubes?

you could just ditch the O2s and run it in open loop mode and run open LT headers all the time at the cost of fuel economy, etc.. But who cares right now.. gas prices are getting cheap again!

Re: open long tubes?

my plan is to do coated pacesetter longtubes....dual manual cutouts...into 3" true duals H-pipe that dump before the axle.... wat problems should i expect with the 02 sensors?

Just put the dumps a good couple feet back past the collector at the end of the headers and you should be fine, long as fresh air doesn't reach the O2's as the exhaust scavenges you should be good.

So say there were leaks in an exhaust system, the o2s see fresh air more often and compensate by running richer?

Why do you say that you'll sacrifice fuel economy running in open loop? I run an open loop tune and I'm pretty happy with my gas mileage. In open loop, unlike closed loop, you can set your own a/f.
