no real reason to unless you are making an all out race car.

You will run into problems with the distributer hiting the cowl. About the only advantage to switching over to a gen one block is probably th better selection of cylinder heads, although some worked afr's will flow great.

better blocks, heads, intakes, ignitions.

quite a few people have done it, but like they said above, its usually only worth doing for an all-out race car.
also, if youre going carbed, youd need a cowl hood to fit it.

Yea, allthough there are gen II smallblock cars runing at least 9's so i don't think you will have a problem with the block, you can also run a coil over plug ignition which would be as good as any small block ignition.

Here's a Dart Iron Eagle Gen 1 SBC block in a 97 SS. The intake fits under the stock SS hood with some trimming of the cross-bracing/baffles. But it is an injected engine, not a carb, and uses cam and crank triggers to feed the required timing issue to a a direct fire ignition system, eliminating the need for a distributor. It did still require removal of the windshield wipers though.

my friend put gen 7 dfi on his LT1 and went with a dual sync distributor. the stock lt1 intake was machined for the distributor. the solid motor mounts sit the engine low enough that you can get the cap and rotor off without pulling the motor. it works pretty good.

Re: old school sbc in 4th gen?

I'm in the process of dropping my gen 1 block into my 94 I bought that had no engine in it, I used the bmr tubular k-member which fit perfectly, the engine dropped from the top with no problems but I had to remove everything off the fron of the engine except the harmonic balancer, the use of the tubilar k-member looks as if it is gonna give plenty of clearance to use any type of header you would like to use. for a distributor I am using the mallory breakerless magnetice distributor and it left me more then enough room to remove the cap. I have the full performer RPM package on my car so I have a smaller intake then alot are using, with the edelbrock carb clearance for the passenger side wiper is no problem but for me to use the 750 double pumper and nitros plate I am gonna have to remove the passenger side wiper or fabricate some way of relocating it to be out of the way of the bowl on my carb. I am going to have to build a custom air cleaner set up and I don't see how that could possibly be done without the cowl hood I have. hope this clears up any questions anyone might have, I still have alot of work ahead of me to finish it all up but I will keep everyone who is interested in the swap posted on how things are going and I hope to have pics of it all soon.
