I resurfaced my own flywheel using sandpaper on a pad with a buffer. It has held fine so far.

Why not resurface it? I had mine done for $15. Just look in the phone book.

I agree, just take it somewhere to have done, it takes no time, and costs little...and it gets done right

I would have it surfaced. I had mine done for $30 at a local shop. Red96Lt1 got it done for $15. Like he said, just crack open the phone book. I wouldn't trust a home job. Take a dial indicator over the surface of your flywheel and look at the variations. Have a shop do it with a surface grinder. Then you know its true. If you went through the trouble of taking out your trans, you might as well spend the few bucks to have it surfaced.

How long has the clutch been in? I assume it gets a lot of abuse if you're running 12.7 @115 You really don't need to resurface it unless you are switching discs, if you are putting the same disc back in you've been using it should be "seated" ok. You may do more harm than good sanding or resurfacing the flywheel then putting the worn disc back in.

How would you know if the surface is true if you do it by hand? Plus, I would imagine that the time it takes to and through heat spots on the flywheel would be worth $30 to ya. If you do manage to clean the flywheel by hand any high/low spots will add to clutch chatter.

The surface of the flywheel is very similar to the brake rotors. If a cast surface is overheated it begins to form very hard inclusions that sandpaper will not remove. Sanding will actually remove the softer material around it and make it more pronounced and therefore more damaging to whatever disc you reinstall.
This is why I would recommend getting it resurfaced. Mike

sanding it with a block and emery will remove little material if you are worried about the heat marks just resurface it. It cost $75 to resurface where I live thats why I said just to emery it.
